As a 47-year-old perimenopausal woman, I’ve been loving my summer makeup routine. I had to change my makeup routine quite a few times throughout my 40s because my skin just doesn’t wear makeup like it used to. Below, I share some of my current favorite summer makeup products that either can withstand the heat, help protect from the sun, or both.

For the summer, if I’m not going bare-faced, I’ll opt for a light makeup look. Here are my tried-and-true favorite summer makeup products I’ve been religiously using.
SPF
For sun protection, I’ve been loving the MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème SPF 50. It goes on smoothly. Doesn’t bead up and lays nicely under my makeup.
Another favorite SPF I like to bring with me for touch-ups throughout the day is the COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen Mist SPF 50. I like this SPF spray because it lightly provides a gentle and even mist. I’ve found other SPF sprays were either too aggressive or sprayed unevenly. The Coola SPF does a great job in its spray application.
I will say that it does leave a bit of shine or glow on your skin, so if you’re prone to getting oily, you may not like the finish. Personally, I spray this on my neck and chest too, and it leaves such a sexy sheen.
It can also feel a bit sticky. But again, I’m usually spraying this over my makeup when I’m already hot and sweaty.
One that my girlfriend really likes is the Naked Sundays Hydrating Glow Mist Setting Spray SPF 50+. She has drier skin and says this lays better over her makeup. It does have a more matte finish versus the Coola Classic. But I don’t like the spray application as much, nor the smell or aftermath.
Concealer
For face makeup, I don’t reach for foundation as much. I tend to stay away from anything heavy during the summer months. However, I do love a good concealer.
Currently, my favorite is the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Full Coverage Longwear Concealer in Khaki 6.25. I’m more on the tan side and have found this fits my undertone best. My skin isn’t necessarily cool, warm, or neutral. But if I had to choose, I’d say it’s more on the neutral side. Honestly, I feel like my undertone is a good mix of all three.
Setting Powder
My all-time favorite, regardless of season, is the Revlon Colorstay Finishing Pressed Powder in Light/Medium. I feel like the color is pretty versatile even on my tan skin. I also like this powder because, unlike loose powder, it’s not as messy.
However, the powder is still fine and does a great job of blurring out your pores. I like to use this to set my concealer under my eyes and overall setting my face for a more flawless look.
Blush
I have been using the MDSolarSciences™Cheek Crème SPF 30 | Buildable Cream Blush with Sun Protection in Magic Hour. I was surprised when I started using this. At first, I thought it was gimmicky because it had SPF in it. Didn’t understand the point of having SPF in blush, but I thought I’d give it a go anyway.
But once I started applying it to my cheeks, I noticed that’s where all my sun spots/age spots form. Now, I love this product because I feel like I’m getting extra protection to the area that needs it most.
It is on the more tacky side. I don’t mind it. Because when I go to reach for my face, it’s a reminder that I shouldn’t be touching my face anyway.
I love it so much I’m almost at pan, and the summer isn’t even over yet. I also love that it’s pretty buildable and blendable too. I use the Hourglass No. 15 Blush Brush. I find this really applies the blush best.
Lips
Another of MD SolarScience I like for the summer is the MDSolarSciences™ Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30: Tinted Lip Care with Sun Protection in Shimmer.
If you’ve read any of my other makeup posts, you’ll know I LOVE the Dior Addict Lip Glow Balm in 001 Pink. Both have a pH-balanced formula.
I do find that Dior provides more color and moisture, but I love how the MD SolarScience lip balm offers SPF protection. Sometimes, I’ll apply the Dior lip balm first for more color and hydration. Then top it off with the MD SolarScience lip balm for sun protection.
Eyes
I honestly haven’t been reaching for mascara during the summer. Instead, I’ve just been curling my lashes and have found that it has worked well for me during the hot summer days.
The lash curler I’ve been using is the SEPHORA COLLECTION Eyelash Curler. I don’t know if this brand is the best. I don’t really have anything to compare it to. I just know it works for my lashes and my big eyes. Honestly, I don’t know what to look for in a “good” eyelash curler. I guess that it doesn’t pinch me?
For nights when my eyes do need more, I’ve been reaching for the Maybelline Lash Sensational Lengthening Mascara in Very Black. I have always loved this formula. It doesn’t smear as much as other mascaras and makes my lashes look so long and luscious.
I usually apply two coats and find that it can be a little annoying to take off at the end of the night. But it sheds and smears very minimally throughout the day for me, even in the heat.
Bronzer
This is another optional summer makeup product I use. I don’t always wear but when I do, I love the RMS Beauty ReDimension Hydra Bronzer in Tan Lines.
The color is beautiful on tan skin. It’s not too warm and muddy. And the formula is super nice and blendable. Sometimes, I’ll swipe this on my eyes as eyeshadow if I want a more done-up look.
