Once I hit my mid-40s, I noticed my style needed a change. I was having a hard time trying to figure out how to dress in a way that made me feel more confident.
What I used to wear in my 20s, 30s, and even early 40s no longer worked for me and made me feel confident anymore. Did you notice this change in you too?
There was a point at 43 when I kinda gave up on fashion altogether and just wore things that made me feel comfortable, like sweats and T-shirts. At the time, I lost my right ovary and was recovering for a few months. I also took a three-year hiatus from dating.
I thought there was no point in getting pretty or feeling pretty anymore. But I was wrong. Even though I wasn’t dating, I realized I still needed to feel pretty for myself. Cuz ya know, when you look good, you feel good! Right?!
That’s when I slowly looked into my style again and slowly started to curate a closet that still made me feel youthful, more modern, updated, and polished.
Summer Outfits for Women Over 40
Are you also having a hard time updating your style while still showcasing the essence of your personal style?
Think about your style and what areas of your body you like and don’t mind showing off that make you feel more confident. It can be your arms, legs, neck, or even shoulders.
When you think about this, you can build a wardrobe that can highlight your favorite areas. This can help make you still feel sexy and purchase pieces that work for your body.
I’ve been doing Pilates for a year now. It’s finally showing up in my chest and shoulders, which I don’t mind showing off now. Needless to say, I’ve been into off-the-shoulder tops and find them perfect in this summer heat. Especially when you pair them with either a linen pair of pants or a skirt.
The one that has been a staple in my wardrobe is Maeve Oslo Off-the-Shoulder Tee. I got it one size larger than my usual Medium just because of reviews. It does fit a little loose. That’s fine with me since it gives a more casual look.
I have a larger chest, so I don’t always want to highlight that. Wearing off-the-shoulder tops helps showcase my shoulders, which I worked so hard for, but also discreetly minimizes my chest area.
I also don’t like wearing strapless bras and have found that nipple covers really work well for me. When you already have the right undergarments, this makes getting dressed so much easier. I highly recommend investing in the right undergarments to give you peace of mind and save you time when getting ready.
Other summer pieces I’ve been loving are from Aritzia. Aritzia is a bit pricey, but in my opinion, worth the price tag. They offer a lot of timeless pieces.
The pieces I recommend investing in are the Babaton InterLock Cotton Script Top (I have it in Gala Plum), Aritzia The Lodge Pant – CruiseLinen (I have it in white), and the Aritzia The Effortless Short Mid-Thigh – CruiseLinen (in black).
I also invested in this dress for the summer, Hutch Off-The-Shoulder Twofer Midi Dress, but have yet to wear it. I thought it was a fun dress I could bring with me to New York in September. Depending on what shoes I wear, I could either dress this up or down.
For instance, pairing it with a nice pair of black flip-flops will give this dress a more casual day look. I’ve been wearing the Archie’s Arch Support Flip Flops in black all summer long.
But if I wanted to elevate this look for dinner or a fancier moment, I would pair it with something like these fun pair of Steve Madden Valentin Slide Sandals.
For the summer, I swapped out crossbodys and have been reaching for shoulder bags. It makes outfits look more polished and put together, as well as updates your style.
