7 Renter Friendly Bedroom Ideas That Will Upgrade Your Room

Renter Friendly Bedroom Ideas

Hi there! Want to update your bedroom but on a budget? Do you need inspiration for renter friendly bedroom ideas? Below, I share with you my list of 5 things you can do to give your bedroom an updated refresh.

At the bottom of this blog, you will find a widget linking the suggestions mentioned in this post. The subtitles are also linked for your convenience.

This post is all about renter friendly bedroom ideas.

Curtains

This can drastically change the look of your room and provide the privacy you need. For me, curtains can make a room either look updated or outdated. When choosing curtains, opt for solid colors and quality materials like linen or cotton. You can find affordable quality curtains online from retailers like Target or Kohl’s.

And if you can’t put holes in your wall and your place doesn’t have a curtain rod already attached. There are so many options out there.

If you have vertical blinds or any blinds, for that matter, that you want to conceal, you can use NoNo Brackets. NoNo brackets are no-drill brackets that you can clip on without permanent damage. NoNo brackets offer options for vertical blinds and mini-blinds.

Another option that doesn’t require drilling is tension rods. If you have a smaller window that uses light-weight curtains, a tension rod may work for you. These are also useful in bathroom windows, and the selection of tension rods and curtains I find are so cute!

If you have a French door in the bedroom like I do, there are magnetic rods you can attach a curtain to.

If you can put holes in the wall, there are a couple of easy options other than drilling. Option 1, if your window has a crown molding frame around it, you can opt for Kwik Hang Curtain Brackets. This, however, will limit where you can hang your curtain. The brackets need to sit on the window frame.

If you want more options in curtain lengths, in option 2, you can go with Kenney curtain rods. Both options need to be nailed in, which, in my opinion, is a lot easier than drilling.

So, if you need an instant upgrade, change your curtains!

Lighting

Another thing you can do to upgrade your bedroom is to change the lighting. Whether this is pendant lighting or lamps in your bedroom. Lighting is a great way to update your bedroom and create a beautiful ambiance.

This could also mean changing your lampshades, which is a more affordable option to give your lighting an upgrade and perhaps the easiest renter friendly bedroom upgrade.

If you decide to change the pendant lighting in your room, be sure to keep the original pendant lights so you can switch them back. Switching out the pendant lighting can be a renter friendly process because you don’t need to drill anything really.

I was able to change my pendant light without drilling or creating modifications to my ceiling. When I switched out my pendant light, the one I chose had a smaller base than the original pendant light. That was easily fixed by adding a ceiling medallion. When I used a ceiling medallion, I didn’t even glue or nail it in. I just used the base of the pendant light to hold in the ceiling medallion.

This is my second time changing it out. I sold my first pendant light on OfferUp. When I changed it out the second time, I hired someone from Thumbtack for $75 to install it.

If you have lamps, have fun looking for lampshades. Check out thrift stores, HomeGoods, or Facebook Marketplace! Look for colorful, printed, or pleated lampshades! Like I said, have fun!

My current lamps have a black base and a silk floral printed lampshade in sage green and black with an ivory base. They’re Asian inspired and super pretty! If I ever get bored of them, I can easily switch out the lampshades for something different.

Knobs

I’ve had my current bedroom furniture for over 10 years. When I got bored of it but didn’t want to invest in a new bedroom set, I switched out all the knobs in my dresser and nightstands.

I wish I kept my old knobs, because they were silver and my current ones are brass. I’m over brass now and want to go back to silver. But in between brass and silver, I also had glass knobs. Needless to say, you can also have fun with knobs! It’s such a simple change but such a noticeable impact.

Wallpaper

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a great option for updating your bedroom. I personally have not tried it since my walls are textured. I heard peel-and-stick wallpaper works best on flat surfaces.

It’s not impossible to use peel-and-stick wallpaper on textured walls, but it’s not recommended. If wallpaper is not an option for you, then try the next suggestion.

Artwork

Now, artwork can definitely update a room or change the vibe. It all depends on the art pieces you pick, whether that’s something more modern or abstract, etc. You should take into consideration the size as well.

Do you want an art wall or just one main piece of art? Do you already have a frame out you’re tired of? Can you simply replace them with other prints?

The majority of my artwork came from thrift stores. They are all so beautiful, which is subjective. But I feel like I got lucky with finding some of my artwork. However, the ones I purchased at HomeGoods are pieces that I’m no longer happy with. Here are a few ideas I will be implementing later to update some of these pieces.

For a couple of them, I no longer enjoy the actual artwork but still like their frames. I plan on finding a print of the same size on Etsy or at my local thrift store to replace it.

The other thing I want to do is paint my frames in different colors. At one point, I was so into gold that most of my frames are gold. This looks so dated now and too uniform. I want more fun and color! I plan on painting them fun colors like red, blue, and/or green.

One of my very first art pieces, which is a pretty large size, had ugly grey matting. Every time I looked at my painting, the grey matting would be the center of my attention. It was so annoying because the picture was beautiful, but the matting was distracting for me.

I used cream acrylic paint to paint over the grey. Now, my art stands out front and center, as it should.

If you’re scared to put holes in your walls to hang your art pieces, there are plenty of options to use. You can use adhesive putty or hanging strips. Just be sure to check the weight of your art and the maximum weight the putty or strips can hold.

Switch Plates

This is also another fun upgrade I did as a one of my renter friendly bedroom ideas! I swapped out all of my light switch plates. I haven’t done so with my outlets, as this was more expensive than I realized. That’s only because I found some unique cute ones on Anthroplogie.

It definitely brought some fun and uniqueness to my room, and it’s something I didn’t realize is always in my view. Swapping out my switch plates for something a little fancier brought that touch of glamour my room craved.

It was also pretty simple to change and didn’t require electrical work. If yours is pretty basic and simple, it should be easy. If not, perhaps you can hire someone from TaskRabbit or ThumbTack to install them along with your new pendant lighting.

Rugs

Do you have space for a rug? These are also great additions to any room, whether or not you already have carpet. Especially if you have carpet and are not fond of it, cover it up with something prettier! It will just look layered.

Try a small area rug instead of a huge one, so you don’t have to commit to something so big. If the area rug doesn’t work out in your room, use it in another room.

Keep it small enough to be able to move it around and big enough for it to have some significance in the room. Plus, smaller rugs are more affordable. Perhaps a 5×7 ft area rug would be a great option for your bedroom.

There you have it, 5 renter friendly bedroom ideas! Is there anything you’d like to add to the list? If so, share with me in the comments below some of your ideas. I would love to learn about them.

As always, thanks for reading.
