How To Make Your Bed Comfortable Like A Hotel
When I think of hotels, I think of luxury.Sure, I’ve had my fair share of not so great hotels. But for the most part, now that I’m traveling at an older age, sleep is important to me. So yes, my hotel room is important now. A major part of sleeping well is staying at nice hotels. They don’t have to be ridiculously expensive. For instance, staying at a Hilton Hotel can be pretty affordable and their rooms are pretty consistent, kind of like ordering a Peet’s coffee.
I remember I went on a girl’s trip and my girlfriend was able to get a room at the Hilton for a really reasonable price. She used her points to lower the cost. They had one of the most loveliest bed situations going on. The pillows were one of the best I’ve ever slept on. So great that my girlfriend and I inquired about their pillows and found out that they offered them online at $175 a pillow!
At the time, that was definitely out of my price range and actually still is today. It’s easy to make your bed comfortable like a hotel when you don’t have a budget. If that’s your budget, unlimited, that’s so great! However, this article is most likely not for you because I share items that are relatively on the more affordable side which fits most budgets. But even if you have an unlimited budget and want to save then by all means, read on…
This post is all about how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel (on a budget).
Pillows
Let’s start with pillows. There are so many options out there that it can get overwhelming. In order to make your bed comfortable like a hotel, I would say down feathers are the way to go. Down feathers provide the fluffiness of a lux hotel inspired bed. Down feather pillows are just luxurious and if you get the right one, they’re also very comfortable. However, they can be on the more pricey side (especially if you find ethically sourced ones) and if you don’t want any animal products this definitely will not be the best option. If this is not an option for you, I totally get it. My friend is against any type of animal products.
A great alternative which I discovered a couple years ago are adjustable memory foam filled pillows. There are so many options as well that it can fit any budget. They don’t fluff as nicely as down feathers which in my opinion, the fluff is what makes your bed like a hotel. However, adjustable memory foam filled pillows are super comfortable and like the name of it implies, they are adjustable to suit your comfort needs.
If you have a queen size bed, I’d opt for 4 standard size pillows, a twin, two standard size pillows, and if you have a king, I’d still opt for four pillows but either king or queen size pillows will make your bed comfortable like a hotel.
Bed Sheets
Moving on to the next important factor on how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel are sheets. I found some really affordable sheets on Amazon and Home Goods. Depending on where you live, perhaps these stores are not available to you. That’s okay. I’ll tell you what to look for when you want to make your bed comfortable like a hotel.
In my personal opinion, I prefer natural fibers over synthetic fibers. It’s a lot softer on my skin and more breathable. I always look for 100% cotton sheets and the higher the thread count supposedly the softer it is. For me, the thread count is not that important. I’ve purchased a 400 thread count sheet set and it’s one of my favorites. I’ve read anything over 1000 thread count is not the greatest. So with that being said, if you were to purchase a sheet set, opt for something below 1000 thread count.
Now, let’s discuss color. I say white sheets all the way! I know this may sound boring but it’s so easy. I’ve always used white sheets since the 90’s. It’s easy because I have multiple sets of white bed sheets. I can mix and match my pillow cases with my flat and fitted sheets and they always match. Plus, at the end of the day when your bed is made up, and you’re getting ready to hop in, it feels like you’re getting into nice fluffy cloud that envelops you.
If white is too harsh, opt for cream. If that doesn’t work, and you need color or pattern, opt for one solid color of your preference. If you need pattern, pick a stripe sheet set. Remember, this is all about how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel. Patterns are cool but if your budget is limited, picking something that’s easy and versatile is the way to go.
Also, when I make my bed, I use all my sheets, flat and fitted. Flat sheets are controversial at my home. Two of my girls don’t like using flat sheets. My youngest and I both like flat sheets. I prefer a flat sheet because when I’m in bed, I feel like I always need to be covered. If I’m hot, I’ll remove my duvet but still have a thin flat sheet to cover me which provides that extra feel of security. Plus, a flat sheet will make your bed comfortable like a hotel too. Comforter
I love a nice fluffy comforter. I had a down feather duvet for the longest. If you can, I would suggest getting a duvet instead of a regular comforter. It doesn’t have to be a down duvet. I now have a synthetic duvet I purchased from Target. I switched because a down duvet can get really messy with feathers everywhere when you’re changing the duvet cover. If you want that fluffy look and not a down duvet, you can purchase two synthetic duvets and stuff them both into the duvet cover. There are so many affordable options out there like at Ikea or Target. If you cannot get to either of these stores just look for an all season duvet.
Duvet Cover
Now, we need something to protect and cover our duvet which is a duvet cover. I love a 100% linen duvet cover. Again, I’d choose white but that’s just me. It’s simple and easy. I like a linen duvet cover because if you get a quality linen duvet, you will spend less time getting the wrinkles out. My linen duvet cover seems to smooth out wrinkles on its own.
This is where you could probably get away with a pattern or even a different solid color. But again, if you want to know how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel, white is the luxury way to go. Simple or double stripes only outlining the border of the duvet cover is a nice luxurious touch too. If your sheets or duvet cover ends up with lots of wrinkles, I would suggest ironing them if you want your bed like a hotel. I know, that may sound a bit extra but trust it is worth making your bed look its best so you can feel your best.
Quilt or Coverlet
Another added item to make your bed comfortable like a hotel is adding a quilt or coverlet. This is actually where I add my pattern or pop of color. Folding it to be placed at the end of your bed gives your bed that look and feel of a hotel. Have you ever noticed how some hotels offer you that extra bit of fabric at the end of you bed, apparently it’s for laying your suitcases on. Instead of having that fabric, use a coverlet or quilt. In my post 9 Tips To Fall Asleep Easier which you can find here, I write about how I like my room temperature cold but my bed warm. Having a coverlet or quilt provides me that extra warmth to my bed like I’m looking for.
Mattress Topper
If purchasing a new mattress is out of your budget, think about getting a mattress topper. I don’t like my bed too soft, so I purchased a 2″ memory foam topper from Target. My mattress also sits pretty high naturally so adding 2 more inches is better for my bed. I had a 3″ topper before and that extra 1 inch made it difficult to get into bed at times. It was also too soft where I would sink in and also made it difficult to get out of. If you have a low sitting bed, then a 3″ topper might be the way to go. But definitely get a mattress or mattress topper that will make you slumber not only luxurious but comfortable!
Throw Pillow
I usually don’t have throw pillows on my bed. Hence, why I didn’t add this to my count of how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel. If I do, it’s only one throw pillow. Sometimes, depending on the types of throw pillows you have, it can make your bed look cheap. Simple and luxurious is the look we want. Remember, this post is about how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel. Sure, there are throw pillows in hotel rooms (which I usually toss on the floor) but a hotel bed is usually not inundated with them. Like I said, I only have one and it’s a small lumbar throw pillow that I lay in front of all my other pillows in the middle.
I also try changing my sheets weekly. I love getting in to nice clean sheets. That in itself feels like such a nice treat and so luxurious. I know for some changing your sheets weekly may be difficult because, ya know, life, or maybe for some it’s easy peasy. But this is why I recommend white sheets because if you have more than one, it doesn’t matter if your sheets get mixed up. As long as they’re clean, you can change them out easier.
Make Your Bed
Here’s my last bit of advice, make your bed! Awhile ago, when I was going through a really dark time in my life, the only thing that I could muster up to do that brought me a sense of accomplishment was making my bed. I once told my girlfriend how I incorporated making my bed daily, she kind of scoffed at me and said, “That’s a given.” At the time, it wasn’t for me. It wasn’t automatic, it wasn’t a part of my routine. However, like I said, during that dark period in my life, I decided to make it routine.
That catapulted other daily routines that helped me get out of my rut. My friends statement didn’t. It just made me feel judged. I say this to let you know that no matter how small your goal or positive change is, do it if it makes you feel better and don’t worry about what others have already made routine in their lives. Because that’s all that it is, is their life. Your life is your design on your own timing.
Now, I try to make my bed daily (emphasize on try). It doesn’t happen every day but it happen often enough that it’s part of my routine. It helps me bring a sense of success no matter how trivial it may feel to others. The other plus side is at night when I’m getting ready for bed, my bed feels more welcoming when it’s done than not. Plus, a hotel bed is always made up so if that’s a motivating factor to get you to make your bed, then make it. As the saying goes, when you feel good, you look good or vice versa (my kids and I also debate about which order this should go). It’s also like that for your bed, when it looks good, it feels good (hopefully with the right foundation).
In summary, how to make your bed comfortable like a hotel takes four fluffy pillows, 100% cotton bed sheets in white, a nice duvet for all seasons, a linen duvet cover also in white, a bit of ironing, maybe one throw pillow or none, clean sheets and making your bed every morning.
The look and feel of my bed has always been important to me. However, I didn’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about it. Once you establish your foundation for your bed, it gets easier. Like I said, I’ve always used white sheets and it just makes making my bed simple, kind of like how Steve Jobs only wore a black turtle neck and jeans.
