How To Eat Edibles The Right Way

In this post, I will share my experiences with cannabis and how I eat edibles with THC or consume marijuana. Hopefully, this will help guide you if you’re curious about how to eat edibles with THC. As with anything that may interfere with your health, you should always consult with your physician.

This post is a how-to on THC edibles based on my personal experience as a “gummy gardener” or “stoner” for the past three decades. When it comes to THC gummies, you want to start slow. Think 5mg of THC. And wait…wait at least an hour from when you consume your first edible gummy.

If you haven’t had gummies before or in a long time, I’d suggest you test how your body responds to edibles first, in the comfort and safety of your home. If nothing feels different in that hour of waiting, I highly suggest waiting another 30 minutes before taking another 5mg. Especially if it’s your first time.

Have fun experimenting.

I did when edibles started to be sold on the market legally. It was new to me and many other people. Back then, it would hit a lot of people pretty hard. They would get impatient waiting for the edible to take effect, not realizing it can take up to an hour.

I made a whole weekend experience out of it. The first several times I tried edibles, I’d find myself lying on the grass in my backyard. I’d look up at the sky, trying to get some fresh air. This usually helped me feel better and less high. But one time it didn’t, and I almost had my 25-year-old daughter at the time take me to the ER. Thank goodness, I was able to calm my heart rate down and not ask her.

That’s another thing I noticed before, my heart rate would increase when I was at the peak of my high. If I were hiking or doing something active, I’d have to be mindful not to exert myself too much and slow down.

After nearly having my daughter drive me to the ER, I decided to turn one weekend into a fun science experiment.

I’d write down what time I took my first 5mg, what time it kicked in, how I felt, and how long the high lasted. Before you knew it, I understood my body better and how each milligram affected me.

In the beginning, I’d start with 5mg of THC and wait an hour for it to kick in. My high would usually last for about two to three hours before I needed to take another 5mg. Now, I take a 5mg edible and smoke a joint while I wait for the first edible to kick in. A 5mg edible will probably last for about an hour for me now until I take my next 5mg.

I can eat up to 15mg of THC at once, but what I don’t like about that is it’s not a gradual high. It usually hits me all at once, quickly, and then dissipates just as quickly. I’m also not the type who can just sit there when I’m high. However, in all honesty, I can totally just sit there when I’m sober. I need to move my body, or else I’ll be in my thoughts. Instead, I love to clean and organize my home, garden, and do things that are productive. Or else, my thoughts will get the better of me.

To stay positive and productive, I need to move my body. Before, I used to take a 5mg edible on my way to the park and run 5 miles. This, of course, was after I really understood how my body worked with edibles, though. At the time, when I was really into running, this was such a fun hobby for me.

I also learned that eating an edible with less than 5 mg of THC actually made me feel sleepy. Actually, I feel like 5mg is starting to make me feel this way as well. I plan on increasing my dose and starting with 7.5mg or 10mg again, since my body has changed, and see how that works for me now.

Learn your body and the effects of edibles slowly. There really is no accurate chart that will give you the correct dosage since we are all different. And the effects are also totally different.

Charts are helpful as a guide. But at the end of the day, you really need to learn what works for you and your body. Some women my age can consume up to 60mg, or even 200mg at once. For me, I’d for sure be in the ER thinking my life was over.

Take your time and be patient. Take this moment to experiment. Enjoy the process by combining it with hobbies you can enjoy at home, like gardening, drawing, or listening to music. Think of this as “me time.”

One of the reasons I love cannabis is that it helps me chill without guilt. It also gives me peace and patience with most everything. I love smoking or eating an edible before I venture into the stores during the holiday rush.

You want to cut me in line? Go ahead. Things just become so less important or serious to me. I become super grateful for just living. And this is coming from someone who has had to attend two anger management courses during my lifetime.

Back then, marijuana was illegal. For me, it mostly came in the form of flowers/buds/trees that I’d smoke. Edibles were not popular nor sold as freely as today. So options were limited. Now, options are abundant. Some of my favorite edible brands are Wylds, Camino (Kiva), and Terra (Kiva), just to name a few. For joints, I enjoy the brand Fig Farms and always ask for premium flowers.

There are two strains of cannabis that I know of, which are Sativa and Indica. Sativa is supposed to be the strain that gives more energy. Indica is the strain that is supposed to be more mellow. Both affect me the same.

Again, test out both strains and see if you notice a difference.

As far as resin, rosin, wax, etc. I am not well-versed in that at all. I grew up smoking weed when it was illegal, and was resistant to entering a dispensary for a long time. Education on cannabis was far and few between back then.

Think of me as a hippie stoner. Who only consumes cannabis in the form of a joint, a bong, a chillum, a pipe, or edibles. What I look for now is how high the THC percentage is in an edible or flower. The higher the THC, the better, in my opinion.

At one short point, I loved cannabis oils and vaping. However, I noticed my throat would hurt the next day. I would also feel slightly hungover because I would hit the pen so much the day before. Four hits of the pen were equivalent to one hit of a joint to me. It wasn’t until I met a stoner scientist who told me she didn’t like to vape. According to her, she didn’t want to be a guinea pig. Since there was little research on the effects of vaping at the time.

I may not be your typical “stoner” or “gummy gardener” since I don’t consume as much as others. However, I still consider myself insert title from above because of the history, knowledge, and experience I have with cannabis. I typically smoke a joint or eat a gummy most weekends or days off for several months. Then take a few months off to “cleanse” myself again.

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a long time, sharing my love for cannabis. I want my blog to better reflect who I am now that I’ve been writing for a while. I hope you enjoyed this post. As always, thanks for reading.

Love, Sutivi
