I was sitting in my living room, measuring my furniture trying to find the perfect size storage box for my internet gear, like router and modem. I wanted to cover these things with something more appealing to the eye.
However, this did not come easily for me. I couldn’t find anything with the specific dimensions I was looking for. And, if I did find something, it was just not appealing. I scoured online for hours.
It wasn’t until one of my daughters gifted me a perfume set that came in a beautiful box. I didn’t want to recycle it like I usually do.
Instead, I came up with some creative storage ideas that included cutting the back out (for the extension cords) and using it as storage for my internet gear.
This post is all about creative storage ideas.
As you can see from the image above, I used a Flowerbomb gift box to hide my modem and router. The cool thing about using this box is that I separated the top portion of the box by cutting it. In the picture above, the lid is tipped slightly down. Doing this allowed me to adjust the height to fit all the gear inside. I don’t think you can tell just by looking at it straight away.

In the image above, I show how the back is cut out. Cutting out the back allowed the cords to still be intact and plugged into the outlet. I lifted the lid slightly so you could see.
P.S. Don’t mind the dust. We have 3 cats, a dog, and 5 people living here. Things get dusty quickly. Tip: Having a box that’s light in color helps camouflage dust.
Doing this propelled me to use other beautiful boxes I kept from shopping trips that I didn’t want to discard. I had Cartier boxes and a Prada sunglass box I turned into storage. Yes, yes, I had a bit of a spending problem, which I write all about in my financial journey here.

These boxes are such a great alternative to storage. The great thing about utilizing them is that you probably already have some hidden in your closet.

As mentioned above, I used my Cartier boxes to store my fabric tissues (only I use them) and charging accessories. My Prada sunglass box was a perfect fit to hold my pantyliners in my bathroom.
In addition, I also used an old chocolate box that looks like a book to hold floss. The book is made out of metal, which helps with sanitizing and cleaning. Plus, it shuts tightly.
I wish I had thought about using the beautiful boxes that I already had sooner. I wouldn’t have wasted so much money and time looking for storage that wasn’t worth the money, nor was it pretty.

Another form of storage I used is shoe cabinets. I purchased mine from Ikea because the dimensions fit my wall perfectly. At first, I thought shoe cabinets were only for storing shoes. However, I visited a friend in the city and noticed that lining the wall under her TV were 3 sets of the same shoe cabinets side by side.
She lives in a relatively small space, so maximizing her living space was essential. She opened her shoe cabinets and showed me that she housed multiple random things in there, other than her shoes!
It was a smart storage solution, especially since her space was so small. Using shoe cabinets was genius because they were narrow enough to walk by without bumping into them.
Oh, and before I forget, I also wanted to share that I cut out a cardboard box and used the bottom half as an organizer inside my junk drawer.
I figured since this drawer was a catch-all, I needed something durable yet not too precious. I’m not going to show that since it is my junk drawer and does get pretty junky.
I hope these images offer you some creative storage ideas! The key is using what you already have and being creative with it.
